Drake’s Bay Oyster Farm
This is an awesome farm in Point Reyes! They gave our group a tour of how they cultivate the oysters and how oysters are actually good for the environment! Some fun facts I learned: an oyster can clean up to 20 gallons of sea water a day, the oysters have promoted the growth of eel grass in the area, all the clean water encourages other animals like seals to come raise their pups there! After our tour, the tour guide shucked some fresh oysters for us and gave them to us with some lemon and an old family recipe of oyster sauce. IT WAS SO GOOD. I had never had raw oysters before! I will definitely be eating those again some time. I wish I would have bought some to take home and make oysters rockefeller! Unfortunately, the farm is in some legal trouble. They are located in a national seashore and the national parks service wants to shut them down! There was an environmental report on them that was put together very selectively, making Drake’s Bay look way worse than the are. You can learn a bit about that here. It would be such a shame for a wonderful company like this to close down! There would be major tolls on the local economy and a huge change in the oyster supply in San Francisco! So maybe think about giving Interior Secretary Ken Salazar a call or a letter expressing your support for this historic and beneficial farm!
